Highlights of your Tanzania honeymoon

  • A Maasai blessing of your marriage. In an intimate ceremony the Maasai community blesses your marriage in their own way, full of symbolism. A moment that anchors the two of you for good.

  • A balloon over the Serengeti at sunrise. In the dark you lift off together, high above the plains, while the savannah wakes beneath you. Breakfast waits in the middle of the landscape after you land.

  • On safari together, with your own guide and jeep. Your own 4x4 with an open roof, and all the time you want to stay where you are. From the elephants in Lake Manyara to the lions in the Ngorongoro Crater.

  • Sleeping in our own camp in the Serengeti. At Kimbilio, our own camp away from the busy routes, you sleep with nothing but canvas between the two of you and the wilderness, under a sky full of stars.

  • Finishing on Zanzibar. After the adventure together you trade the dust for the white beaches of Zanzibar, where time slows down and you look back on it with your feet in the sand.

Our wedding in Tanzania

We got married in Tanzania ourselves

In 2010 Selma and Ngomi married each other in Tanzania. Half a plane of friends and family flew out from the Netherlands, and on the day itself we drove through Moshi in an open jeep. The Maasai came to the party and gave us a cow, and our wedding cake was goat roasted over the fire. None of which your own day has to look like.

But that day, among those people and in that landscape, changed everything. It was the start of our life together here, and it gave us the idea to arrange honeymoons for other people too. Because we know from our own experience what it is to celebrate your love in a place you never forget, and how much it means to start a new chapter together, far from home, with all the time in the world for each other.

We would like you to have that too. And because we live here and know the country inside out, we know how to make your honeymoon something that belongs to the two of you.

A luxury honeymoon in Tanzania is not about gold taps, not to us. It is about your own guide, a tent with a view, and a morning when nobody else is anywhere near.

Your journey through Tanzania, from the first savannah to the beaches of Zanzibar

Arrival at Kilimanjaro

You land at Kilimanjaro Airport, where your guide is waiting. On the way to Moshi you hear the night sounds of Africa, crickets, a breeze through the banana trees. Your first night you sleep in a green, unhurried town at the foot of the mountain, and on a clear morning Kilimanjaro fills the whole horizon. That is how your trip starts together, rested and ready.

A Maasai blessing in West Kilimanjaro

You travel into the highlands, to a lodge on Maasai land, where you are met with colourful robes and singing. You walk their land with a Maasai guide, and in the evening you eat by the fire under a sky full of stars. The next day your marriage is blessed by the community, in an intimate ceremony full of symbolism. A moment that anchors the two of you for good. And part of your stay goes to their school and their healthcare.

Your first safari day in Lake Manyara

Now the safari begins. The moment the roof of the jeep opens, the adventure starts together. Lake Manyara is small and green, with elephants close by and thousands of flamingos turning the lake pink. A gentle, varied first day, where your eye learns to look. Who spots the first animal?

The Ngorongoro Crater

Early in the morning you drop down the steep walls of the Ngorongoro Crater, the largest intact volcanic caldera in the world. Inside those walls thousands of animals live close together, from elephants to lions, and with some luck the rare black rhino. A morning on the crater floor feels unreal, and in the afternoon you picnic together in the middle of this wonder.
Serengeti Balloon Honeymoon Tanzania

The Serengeti, away from the busy routes

Everyone knows the Serengeti from photographs, and you see why within the first hour, grass plains to the horizon and herds as far as you can look. With your own guide and the roof open, you find the animals at your own pace. At night you sleep at Kimbilio, our own camp in the quiet north, with nothing but canvas between the two of you and the wilderness. By the fire with a drink in your hand you listen to the bush getting on with its night. And on one morning you float in a balloon high above the plains, while the savannah wakes up beneath you.
Tanzania-Safari-Holiday-Makasa-Zanzibar

Slowing down on Zanzibar

A short flight takes you from the dust to the beach. On Zanzibar time stands still for a while. You swim, snorkel over the colourful reefs, or do nothing at all together. If you feel like it, you eat an evening by the sea or wander the narrow streets of Stone Town. The quiet, earned finish to your trip, with your feet in the sand.
So in two weeks you travel from Kilimanjaro, by way of Lake Manyara, the Ngorongoro Crater and the Serengeti, to the beaches of Zanzibar, with time for each other at every stage. This is the trip in outline, the full day-by-day, the accommodation and the price per season are in the honeymoon itinerary.

Honeymoon Tanzania
I literally could not have dreamed of anything better than what Makasa Tanzanian Safaris provided. Every place we stayed was phenomenal and blew away our expectations. Our guide was hugely knowledgeable, super fun and made us feel safe and relaxed. If I did it all over again, I wouldn't change a thing.

The same two people, from your first email to your flight home

Booking a trip this far away with a company on the other side of the world feels like a leap for most people. When it is your honeymoon, you want every part of it to be right. So you are never dealing with an anonymous office here. Zara answers every English enquiry, from Moshi. She thinks it through with you, replies in your language, and knows your trip from the first question to the last day.

Selma runs Makasa from Moshi with her husband Ngomi. The person planning your honeymoon and the people running it on the ground live in the same town, so your question always lands in the right place. You get both halves, someone who writes back in your language, and people on the spot who know the country, the parks and the quiet places for two.

Zara

Zara came out to visit Selma in Tanzania in 2024. In early 2025 she moved from Australia to Moshi with her two young children, so she knows the long drives, the seasons and the parks from living here, not from a brochure. Moving a family across the world teaches you what people mean when they say this one has to be right. Zara looks after every English enquiry, from your first question to the day you fly home.

Selma

Selma came to Tanzania for an internship at a hospital in Moshi, and stayed. She moved from the Netherlands in 2009 and has run Makasa since 2010 together with her husband Ngomi. The two of them married here, so they know as well as anyone what it is to celebrate your marriage in this country. While Zara plans with you, Selma makes sure your honeymoon in Tanzania runs the way it was meant to.

Tanzania is a malaria area. Your doctor or a travel clinic will advise you what suits your trip.

Your trip leaves something behind

We live in Tanzania, so this country is not our market, it is our home. You notice it in the small choices we make every day. Kimbilio, our own camp where the two of you sleep in the Serengeti, runs on solar power, and the packed lunches you take on the road use materials that break down, so we leave nothing behind in the nature you came for.

The Maasai lodge where your marriage is blessed is more than a striking place to spend the night. By staying there you pay directly into schooling, medical care and work for local Maasai families. So your honeymoon means something to the people who make it possible. And the guides and colleagues we work with are Tanzanians, many of them trained by Ngomi himself, which keeps most of what you spend on your trip inside the country.

This is an example, your honeymoon becomes yours

The trip you just read is one of our best honeymoons, but it is a starting point, not a fixed package. More safari or more beach, more active or nothing but rest, a grander lodge or a smaller camp, all of it is possible. And if you want to add another moment to it, a private sundowner out in the savannah or a dinner by the sea on Zanzibar, we arrange that. We build your honeymoon around what the two of you want, and the itinerary gives you a picture of the options and the price.
