Highlights of a safari in Tanzania and Zanzibar

  • Your own 4x4 with a private guide. You travel with your own guide and your own Landcruiser with an open roof, and you set the pace together.
  • A day with the Maasai. In West Kilimanjaro you walk with a Maasai guide across land their families have called home for generations, and in the evening you eat together by the fire.
  • Safari in Lake Manyara, the Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Crater. Three very different parks, from the elephants and flamingos of Manyara, to the great migration in the Serengeti, to the Big Five in the crater.
  • Sleeping in our own Kimbilio camp. In the middle of the Serengeti, in the quiet north near Lobo, you sleep in our own solar-powered tented camp.
  • Finishing on Zanzibar. A domestic flight takes you to the white beaches, where you unwind with snorkelling, diving and a walk through Stone Town.

Away from the crowds, that is the whole idea

A safari in Tanzania is on a lot of lists, and you notice that in the parks. Most trips follow the same route and gather in the same busy part of the Serengeti, sometimes twenty vehicles around one lion. We do it differently. You travel privately, at your own pace, and you sleep in the quiet north where the animals have room and so do you.

We live here, and that changes everything

Selma and Ngomi have run Makasa from Tanzania themselves since 2010. We know the places, the seasons and the people, and that shows in a trip that works, from your first email to your flight home.led with content!

Your own guide, never a stranger

Everyone who drives for Makasa is someone we know personally and chose ourselves. You get your own guide and your own open-roof jeep, and all the time you want to stay where you are.

You sleep in our own camp, in the quiet north

While most travellers gather in the central part of the Serengeti, you sleep at Kimbilio, our own tented camp in the quiet north near Lobo. Out there you often sit with the animals without another vehicle in sight.

Nothing off the shelf, everything built around you

This sample itinerary is a starting point. More safari or more beach, more active or slower, with the children or just the two of you, we put your trip together around what you want.

Your safari through Tanzania and Zanzibar, stage by stage

Fourteen days of bush and beach, built the way a trip should run. First you land gently under Kilimanjaro, then you get to know the country and its people, then deeper and deeper into the wilderness, and finally you unwind on the Indian Ocean.

Arrival at Kilimanjaro

You land at Kilimanjaro Airport, where your guide is waiting. The first night you sleep in Moshi, a green, relaxed town at the foot of the mountain. On a clear morning Kilimanjaro fills the whole horizon, often the first thing that stops you short before you have seen a single park. You do not start rushed, you start rested, and that makes every day after it better. Kilimanjaro is one stop away from most of Europe and North America, and that first night in Moshi is there to absorb the journey.

A day with the Maasai

You travel up into the highlands, to a lodge that stands on Maasai land and is run together with the community. You walk with a Maasai guide across their land, hear how they really live, and in the evening you eat by the fire under a sky full of stars. This is not a performance for tourists. It is a real meeting, and part of what you pay goes back into their school and their healthcare. You sleep in a comfortable hut with a view over the plains.

First safari day in Lake Manyara

Now the safari begins. Lake Manyara is small but lush, known for its elephants, its tree-climbing lions and the thousands of flamingos that turn the lake pink. A gentle first day, where your eye learns to look, before you move on to the largest park of all.

Serengeti, off the beaten track

While others gather in the busy centre, you sleep at Kimbilio, our own tented camp in the quiet north near Lobo. Canvas walls, a real bed, an en-suite bathroom, and at night nothing but the sound of the bush on the other side of the canvas. By day you drive out onto the endless plains with your own guide and the roof open, looking for lions and leopards, and in season for the crossing of the great migration. Out here you often sit with the animals without another vehicle in sight.

The Ngorongoro Crater

You drop down to the floor of the Ngorongoro Crater, the largest intact volcanic caldera in the world. Inside those walls thousands of animals live close together, from rhino and elephant to the lions that have made it their own kingdom. A morning in the crater feels unreal, as if the landscape was laid out for this one moment.

Unwinding on Zanzibar

A short flight takes you from the dust to the beach. On Zanzibar you trade early mornings for white sand and the warm Indian Ocean. You snorkel, you swim in the waves, or you do nothing at all for a few days. If you feel like it, you spend an afternoon getting lost in the narrow streets of Stone Town, with its smell of spices and its centuries-old doors. The quiet, earned ending to a full trip.
This is how you travel in two weeks from Kilimanjaro, by way of Lake Manyara, the Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Crater, to the beach on Zanzibar, with five nights by the sea to unwind. That is the trip in outline. The full day-by-day, the accommodation and the price per season are in the sample itinerary.
Unforgettable dream trip
The safari in Tanzania was great, especially thanks to Humphrey, he was not only a good driver, he was a guide with a lot of knowledge about the animals and he spoke perfect English. He was an entertainer, quiz master and very enthusiastic. Thanks Makasa for an unforgettable dream trip.

Amazing Tanzania holiday
I’ve tried to rack my brain for any cons in this trip and by no fault of Makasa, the only one I can come up with is that we couldn’t stay longer. I without a doubt recommend Makasa and would book again with them in a heartbeat. Thank you for such an amazing Tanzania adventure!

Everything we hoped for
This safari was the trip of our lifetime! Everything went like clockwork, from the pickup at Kilimanjaro Airport to catching the catamaran from Zanzibar. The accommodations, especially in the Serengeti, were all interesting and comfortable. Strongly recommend.

The same people, from your first email to your last day

Booking a trip this far from home, with a company you have never met, feels like a leap. With us you never deal with an anonymous office. Zara is your contact from the first email, and she knows your trip from beginning to end.

She made that leap herself. Zara moved from Australia to Moshi, so she knows how this looks from the other side of the world, and she now lives where your trip happens. Selma runs Makasa there with Ngomi, so your question always lands in the right place.

Zara

Zara came out to visit Selma in Tanzania in 2024. In early 2025 she moved from Australia to Moshi with her two young children, so when she answers your questions about the parks, the seasons or the long drives between them, the answer comes from living here, not from a brochure.

Selma

Selma came to Tanzania for an internship at a hospital in Moshi, and stayed. She moved from the Netherlands in 2009 and has run Makasa since 2010 together with her husband Ngomi. With their three children, who are growing up among the parks that Selma and Ngomi know inside out.

Makasa Tanzania Safari

Is Tanzania safe?

Yes, for the trip you are planning. The areas governments warn about lie in the far south, more than a thousand kilometres from the Serengeti.
Makasa Tanzania Safari

Is there malaria?

Tanzania is a malaria area. You take prophylaxis, and your own doctor advises which kind suits you.
Makasa Tanzania Safari

Is a safari dangerous?

No. You are always with a guide who knows the animals and the rules, and who tells you when to stay in the vehicle.

Your trip gives something back

We live in Tanzania, so this country is not our market, it is our home. You notice it in the small choices we make every day. Our own camp Kimbilio runs on solar power, and the lunch packs we take out with us use biodegradable materials, so we leave nothing behind in the nature you came for.

We look at the same thing when we choose where you sleep, at what flows back to the people who live there. The Maasai lodge is a good example, a place that supports the community around it. And the people we work with, our guides and our colleagues, are Tanzanians we train ourselves. That way most of what you spend on your trip stays in the country, with the people who make your trip possible.

This is an example, your trip becomes yours

The trip you just read shows how we travel, but it is a starting point, not a fixed package. Do you want longer on safari and shorter at the beach, or the other way round? Are you travelling with children, or just the two of you? Do you want it more active, with a walk or a bike ride in between, or all the quiet you can get? All of it is possible. We put your trip together around what you want, and the sample itinerary already gives you a sense of the options and the price.
