Southern charms

More experienced travellers, who may have visited Tanzania before, will find that the southern region offers undiscovered territory. Selous, Ruaha, and Mikumi may be less well known, but they are certainly not less interesting. The south is more overgrown and distances seem longer, which sometimes creates the impression that wildlife herds are fewer and further apart. The exquisite landscape, however, is overwhelming. It is less densely populated, both in terms of locals and tourists, which adds to the sense of being an explorer. The beauty of this arrangement is that your Makasa guide is always close by so that you will never get lost, even though you are 10,000 kilometres away from home.

Makasa will take you on an adventure

Whereas the northern wildlife reserves are situated in our backyard, so to speak, southern Tanzania is quite a long drive away – but not for you, as for this particular trip, you will fly over to Dar es Salaam, where we will pick you up. We will visit three different wildlife parks, with a focus on the Rufiji River in Selous. Selous is one of the world’s largest game reserves, covering an area larger than Denmark. It is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Some of the Makasa guides are specialized in the south.

We absolutely loved the accom-modations Makasa selected. All of them!! I highly recommend their service. And our guide Jamal was a pure delight. Very suitable for us, Hakuna Matata was the perfect phrase to describe him. Thank you and I hope we can meet again in near future.

How about a sneak preview to get in the mood?

On safari in a private jeep

Depending on the composition of your group, you will travel in a Land Cruiser seating 5 to 7 people, driven by one of our experienced guides – heading for remote wildlife parks such as Ruaha National Park, Mikumi and Selous Game Reserve. You will feel as if you were stepping into the world of National Geographic. Your car is provided with a special interior with a roof that pops up, allowing you to stand up straight to film or take pictures. You will be amazed at the wildlife you will get to see here.

Boat safari in Selous

Selous is crossed by the Rufiji River, with its mouth on the Indian Ocean. The river is fed by large wetlands and swamps. For those who want to add extra excitement to the safari in these regions, we can optionally organize a boat safari of approximately half a day. The river is teeming with crocodiles and hippos, but as long as you do not attempt to escape over the backs of crowd of crocodiles as James Bond once did in a movie, you will be just fine. This part of the trip is not arranged by Makasa but by the accommodation where you are staying.

Sleeping with lions

Safari nights tend to be a very special experience. Visitors usually spend at least a few of these nights in so-called tented camps. Other than that they have the heavy-duty canvas canopy in common, ordinary tents pale in comparison with these luxury glamping tents. The floors are made of wood and the interior design and particularly the beds are incredibly comfortable and romantic. The tents all have excellent private bathroom facilities. The biggest attraction, however, is the incomparable safari atmosphere. In the mornings, at breakfast, you can have great fun trying to imitate the animal sounds that you heard during the night. Guides are often very good at this. Now, was that a lion’s or a hyena’s cry?

Sun-soaked Zanzibar

Beautiful Zanzibar, with its unparalleled pearly white beaches leading to the azure Indian Ocean, can best be described as a small paradise on earth. It is without a doubt the most delightful place to relax after an exciting safari. Take a refreshing dive to wash off the desert dust! You can go skin-diving, swim with dolphins or take a boat tour in an authentic dhow. A visit to the capital is definitely worth your while. The picturesque Stone Town is the epitome of the romantic beauty of the island. Two smaller islands are worth mentioning as well: Pemba and Mafia, each with their own, unique character.

Dreams come true...
I dreamt a dream. Not a documentary or a movie I have seen compared to our reality. I loved everything and could not even expect more. We got way more than what I could have dreamt of

ommunication with Selma via e-mail was excellent and timely. The tented lodges we stayed in were amazing, Jeep was in good condition and our driver David always on time. It was an experience to never forget and would definitely use Makasa on a next visit to Tanzania.

Amazing, Amazing
I’ve tried to rack my brain for any cons in this trip and by no fault of Makasa, the only one I can come up with is that we couldn’t stay longer. I without a doubt recommend Makasa and would book again with them in a heartbeat. Thank you for such an amazing adventure!

Great local company

We were fortunate to have Humphrey as our guide. He has an excellent knowledge of the flora and fauna. My 11 yr old son remarked that he had learned more during the safari than he had learned the past year in school. This was truly a life-changing vacation. Thank you!

This is just an example

The trip described above is just an example; a marvellous example, indeed, but there are many more options. You can choose to have more safari and less sun, or vice versa. Whether you want a longer or a shorter stay, simpler accommodations or more luxury, everything is possible. Please let us know what you want and we will be glad to arrange an itinerary that suits your every desire. Welcome to Makasa!
