Tanzania Great Migration

Tanzania Great Migration, an impressive spectacle

A cheetah on the hunt, a flamboyance of flamingos wading in shallow water, a pride of lions and their frolicking cubs – you never know what you will see in the wildlife parks of Tanzania, but it is invariably spectacular. When it comes to wildlife spotting, however, nothing compares to a sighting of Tanzania's Great Migration. In terms of numbers and how dramatic it is to see, this is by far the most amazing natural spectacle you will ever see, coming face to face with thousands of wildebeest and zebras on their epic annual trek. Although there is no telling what nature will do, the people of Makasa, with their many years of experience, know exactly where you are most likely to catch a glimpse of this extraordinary phenomenon.

Makasa will take you to the right spot at the right time

Anyone who plans to see the miraculous spectacle of the wildebeest migration in real life will usually wonder what would be the best time to go. The answer is not as easy as you might expect. It has everything to do with where you are. In fact, the migration takes place almost throughout the entire year, but it moves around. At Makasa, we have many years of experience advising our guests on where they can spot the animals. Having spent twenty years tracking the giant herds, Ngomi is an expert who will give you an educated guess as to where they usually are at different times of the year.

Extraordinary experience
Jamal our guide was very helpful, and he was very keen. He has eyes like an eagle. We saw the big 5 and many other animals including the almost endangered wild hunting dogs. We could definitely recommend Makasa.

In search of the Great Migration Tanzania

Crossing the Serengeti in a private jeep...

...in search of the Great Migration. Depending on the composition of your group, you will travel in a Land Cruiser seating 5 to 7 people, driven by one of our experienced guides. Come with us to the world’s most famous wildlife parks: Lake Manyara, the Ngorongoro Crater, and, of course, the Serengeti, where we will try to track down the migrating herds. You will feel as if you were stepping into the world of National Geographic. Your car is provided with a special interior with a roof that pops up, allowing you to stand up straight to film or take pictures. You will be amazed at the wildlife you will get to see here.
Tanzania Great Migration River Crossing

Great Migration River Crossing

The absolute apex of the great migration in Tanzania is the equally famous and notorious crossing of the Mara River. This is where the most beautiful photographs that you see in nature documentaries are shot. Obviously, it is any safari goer’s dream to experience this for themselves. We can point you in the right direction, but we have to keep in mind that nature cannot be forced, nor can it be predicted fully accurately. We can, however, raise our chances by focusing on the month of August.
Tented Camp Serengeti Tanzania

Sleeping with lions

Safari nights tend to be a very special experience. Visitors usually spend at least a few of these nights in so-called tented camps. Other than that they have the heavy-duty canvas canopy in common, ordinary tents pale in comparison with these luxury glamping tents. The floors are made of wood and the interior design and particularly the beds are incredibly comfortable and romantic. The tents all have excellent private bathroom facilities. The biggest attraction, however, is the incomparable safari atmosphere. In the mornings, at breakfast, you can have great fun trying to imitate the animal sounds that you heard during the night. Guides are often very good at this. Now, was that a lion’s or a hyena’s cry?
Tanzania Great Migration Calving Season

Calving season in Serengeti

Yet another interesting time of the Great Migration is calving season, around late January, early February, in Ndutu, south of the Serengeti. During its peak, around 8,000 baby wildebeest are born each day. Seeing such a wobbly newborn calf take its first shaky steps is a truly unforgettable experience. Inevitably, some of the calves will fall prey to predators such as hungry lions, leopards, and cheetahs, but as 80% of the wildebeest females give birth in the same two- to three-week period, most will survive. The best places to stay are the accommodations located in the Ndutu region.

Amazing Safari Experience
Makasa allows a family to have a safari experience that meets their needs. It was great to be able to travel with just our family of five - and see so much of Northern Tanzania. We absolutely loved the safari and have lots of great memories. I highly recommend Makasa Safaris.

Breathtakingly beautiful
We wanted to see the migration of the animals. What a spectacle. Breathtakingly beautiful, not to describe with words, you have to experience this. Not only by seeing it, but by feeling it, smelling it, hearing it, tasting it. We are eternally grateful to our guide Mr. Humphrey for this.
