How much does a safari in Tanzania cost?
A safari in Tanzania is not a cheap trip, and there are reasons for that you deserve to know. What you pay depends mostly on three things: how many people share your vehicle, where you sleep and which season you travel in. Park fees, the vehicle and the guide are the fixed base underneath.
What the price is made of
A safari day with us is built from:
- Park fees. Tanzania has some of the highest park fees in Africa. The government sets them, per person per day, and they go towards running the parks. Sleep inside a park or a protected area and an extra levy is added.
- Your own Land Cruiser. A vehicle with a pop-up roof that drives for you alone for the whole trip, including fuel, maintenance and insurance.
- Your guide. He drives, he knows the animals and he is there for you the whole trip.
- Your accommodation. In or close to the parks, and there you pay for the location.
- All meals. Breakfast, lunch and dinner, and water in the vehicle.
Sometimes domestic flights are added, or an activity such as a balloon flight.
The three things that make the difference
How many of you travel. The vehicle and the guide cost the same whether there are two of you or six. Travel as a family or with friends and you share those costs, and the price per person drops sharply. Travel alone and you carry them alone.
Where you sleep. We work from mid-range to luxury, and the difference in price is large. A simpler camp in the right place often gives you a better safari than a luxury lodge in the wrong one. We will tell you straight which is which.
When you go. From June to October the lodges are at their most expensive, because that is the dry season and the time of the river crossings. In the green season the rates are lower, the parks quieter and the animals simply still there. More on that in safari in the rainy season.

Why it is not a cheap trip, and what you get for it
You are not paying for a group tour in a full bus. You are paying for a vehicle that belongs to you alone, a guide who knows what you want to see, and camps in the places where the animals are. From the moment you land until the moment you leave, everything is taken care of, and you never have to keep track of what the next meal costs.
If you want the price to come down, you can, with the three levers above: travel with more people, choose a simpler camp, or go in the green season. Those are real choices. What we will not do is cut nights in the park or pick a camp in the wrong place to make it cheaper. Then you pay less for a worse safari.
